The end of empire and the making of modern Chinese

This is the period that produced the language you are trying to learn. Before it, serious writing was in classical Chinese; after it, people wrote the way they spoke. Zhōnghuá Mínguó (中华民国) is only thirty-seven years long and it is the hinge.

When it ran, and what came before and after

1912–1949. The Revolution of 1911 overthrew the Qing and ended more than two thousand years of imperial rule. On 1 January 1912 the Republic was proclaimed in Nanjing, with Sūn Zhōngshān (孙中山) — Sun Yat-sen — as provisional president. The period closed with the founding of the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949.

What the era is known for

The end of the imperial system, after two millennia.

The May Fourth and New Culture Movements. The early years were unsettled, with regional warlords contesting power, but they were also a time of enormous intellectual energy. The May Fourth Movement of 1919 and the wider New Culture Movement promoted science, plain-language writing and national renewal.

The War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. From 1931, and fully from 1937, China fought a long war and endured enormous losses before victory in 1945. China became a founding member of the United Nations.

Modern schools, cities and industry. The shape of urban China begins here.

Three figures: Sun Yat-sen, honoured as the forerunner of China's democratic revolution; Lǔ Xùn (鲁迅), the era's greatest writer, who made everyday spoken Chinese the language of serious literature; and Méi Lánfāng (梅兰芳), the Peking opera master who took Chinese theatre to audiences in Japan, the USSR and the United States.

What you'll actually bump into

Báihuà (白话) — the written language itself. Every text message, novel and news article you read in China is in vernacular written Chinese, the standard this movement fought for. Lu Xun's The True Story of Ah Q (阿Q正传) is its landmark, and 阿Q精神 — "Ah Q spirit", meaning self-deceiving consolation after a defeat — is still current slang.

The qipao (旗袍). The modern Chinese dress style still worn at weddings and formal dinners.

The national anthem. "March of the Volunteers" (义勇军进行曲) was written in 1935 as a wartime song and later adopted as the national anthem. You will hear it at flag raisings, school mornings and every international sporting event.

Where this comes up

The Bund in Shànghǎi (上海) is the most-photographed survival: a riverside row of 1920s–30s banks and hotels from China's busiest modern port city, and the standard evening walk for every visitor. In Nánjīng (南京), the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is a vast hillside monument of blue and white stone, climbed by a long staircase, honouring the Republic's founding figure.

In Beijing, the Marco Polo Bridge (卢沟桥, Lúgōuqiáo) is where full-scale war began in July 1937, beside the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

What Laonei does

Laonei (老内) is an AI Chinese translator and cultural guide for foreigners in China. This period is the one where being able to ask a neutral question privately matters most — what a date means, why a museum is framed the way it is, what a colleague meant by a reference. FAQ

What did the Revolution of 1911 bring to an end? More than two thousand years of imperial rule. The Qing dynasty was overthrown, and the Republic of China was proclaimed in Nanjing on 1 January 1912 with Sun Yat-sen as provisional president. The last emperor, Puyi, abdicated that year, closing the imperial system for good.

What was the May Fourth Movement about? It was a movement from 1919 promoting science, plain-language writing and national renewal, part of the wider New Culture Movement. Its most lasting practical result was baihua — writing Chinese as it is actually spoken — which is the written standard everyone in China uses today.

Why is Lu Xun so important in China? He was the era's greatest writer and the one who made everyday spoken Chinese the language of serious literature. His stories, especially The True Story of Ah Q, are taught in every Chinese school, and phrases from them are still used in ordinary conversation.
