The era you are actually living in: China since 1949

Every other page in this series is history. This one is the address on your residence permit. Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó (中华人民共和国) is the country you booked the train ticket in.

When it started, and what came before

Founded on 1 October 1949, with Beijing as its capital, following the Republic of China period. The early decades focused on rebuilding after long years of war, expanding schooling and healthcare, and laying down industry, railways and irrigation. From 1978 the policy of reform and opening up (改革开放, gǎigé kāifàng) encouraged markets, foreign trade and investment, beginning one of the fastest sustained economic expansions in world history and lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.

What this era is known for

1 October 1949 and the capital at Beijing. The founding date is the national holiday — Guóqìng Jié (国庆节), the first week of October, when the entire country travels at once. Plan around it.

Reform and opening up from 1978. Cities grew, universities multiplied, and China became a centre of global manufacturing and technology.

The world's largest high-speed rail network, now linking most major cities.

The Beijing 2008 Olympics and the space programme. Astronauts in orbit, and landers on the Moon and Mars.

Three scientists whose names are on school walls: Qián Xuésēn (钱学森), regarded as the father of China's rocket and missile programmes; Yuán Lóngpíng (袁隆平), who developed high-yield hybrid rice and greatly improved food security; and Tú Yōuyōu (屠呦呦), who discovered artemisinin for malaria and won a Nobel Prize in 2015.

What you'll actually bump into

The train. The high-speed rail — 高铁, gāotiě — running at over 300 km/h is the single technology that will most change how you live here. Learning to book it, and learning that G trains are faster than D trains, is week-one knowledge.

Rice, and how people talk about it. Yuan Longping is genuinely beloved; when he died the response was national. Wasting rice in front of an older Chinese person is a small social error that connects directly to this history, and it is worth understanding rather than dismissing.

Golden Week. The October holiday empties offices and fills every scenic spot in the country, all because of that founding date.

Where this comes up

The National Museum of China on Tiananmen Square walks you through the whole national story, ancient to modern, in one building — the best single orientation available in the country, and free with your passport. The Bird's Nest, the Beijing National Stadium from 2008, is still open to visitors and still striking.

In Shànghǎi (上海), the Bund facing the Pudong skyline is the clearest picture of the pace of change: the old riverfront on one side, towers built since the 1990s on the other, half an hour apart on foot.

What Laonei does

Laonei (老内) is an AI Chinese translator and cultural guide for foreigners in China. Most of what you need here is not historical — it is a bank form, a hospital registration screen, a WeChat message from a landlord, a museum panel. Laonei translates it and explains the assumption behind it. The name itself is a joke on 老外 (lǎowài, foreigner): liuxuesheng.help/talk.

FAQ

When was the People's Republic of China founded? On 1 October 1949, with Beijing as its capital. The date is the national day, and the holiday week around it is one of the two busiest travel periods in the country — worth knowing before you try to book a train or a hotel in early October.

What began in 1978? Reform and opening up, which encouraged markets, trade and investment and started decades of fast economic growth. It is the policy turn that produced the manufacturing base, the coastal cities and the scale of urban construction that any foreigner arriving today sees first.

What is China best known for building since 1949? The world's largest high-speed rail network, linking most major cities at over 300 km/h, is the most visible. Alongside it sit the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Shenzhou crewed spacecraft and Tiangong space station, and hybrid rice, which raised harvests in China and abroad.
