Fifteen years that set the shape of China: the Qin and its First Emperor

The Qín (秦) lasted fifteen years and is arguably the most consequential dynasty in Chinese history. Everything about how China is administered starts here.

When it ran, and what came before and after

221–206 BC. In 221 BC the state of Qin defeated the last of its rivals, ending centuries of warfare among the Warring States that had closed out the long Zhou era, and created China's first unified empire. Its king took the title Shǐ Huángdì (始皇帝), "First Emperor". Heavy labour demands and strict rule brought the dynasty down after fifteen years, and the Han picked up the structure it had built and ran with it for four centuries.

What the Qin is known for

Unification, 221 BC. One date every schoolchild here can give you.

Standardisation. Script, coins, weights and measures — even cart axle widths, so wheels fitted the same ruts. Chancellor Lǐ Sī (李斯) designed the standard small seal script. Round bronze coins with a square hole became the model for Chinese cash for centuries.

Commanderies and counties. Hereditary fiefs were replaced with administrative units run by appointed officials. The province–prefecture–county chain you deal with at any Chinese government office is a direct descendant.

The Terracotta Army and the early Great Wall. Northern walls were linked into one line under the general Méng Tián (蒙恬), who also oversaw the frontier roads.

The Qin also cut the Lingqu Canal (灵渠), linking the Yangtze and Pearl river systems — and it still carries water.

What you'll actually bump into

The Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑, bīngmǎyǒng). If you live in China, your visiting parents will make you go. The figures guard Qín Shǐhuáng's (秦始皇) mausoleum, and the scale of the pits is the part photographs never convey.

Seal script on every chop. The red stamp on a contract or a painting is usually carved in seal script — 篆书, zhuànshū — the descendant of Li Si's standard. If you get a personal name chop made, this is the style you will probably be offered.

Qin Shi Huang as a character. He is everywhere in Chinese film and television, and opinions on him are genuinely divided between "tyrant" and "the man who made one country".

Where this comes up

In Xī'ān (西安) above all — the Terracotta Army and the mausoleum, plus the Shaanxi History Museum, where the Qin coins, weights, measures and inscriptions show how unification actually worked in practice. Near Guilin, the Lingqu Canal in Xing'an County is a Qin waterway from the 3rd century BC still in use, which is a strange thing to stand next to.

And every time you fill in a form that asks for 省 / 市 / 县 — province, city, county — you are using a filing system designed in 221 BC.

What Laonei does

Laonei (老内) is an AI Chinese translator and cultural guide. Seal script is unreadable to most learners and often to native speakers too; museum captions at the Terracotta site run long and the English is patchy. Point Laonei at either, get a plain answer, and ask the follow-ups out loud: liuxuesheng.help/talk.

FAQ

What year was China first unified under the Qin? 221 BC, when Qin defeated the last of the rival Warring States and brought the whole area under one government for the first time. The Qin king then took the title First Emperor, and the state moved immediately to standardise the script, currency, weights, measures and even cart axle widths across the new empire.

Why is the Qin important if it lasted only fifteen years? Because it created the template. The centralised, standardised state run by appointed officials through commanderies and counties, rather than by hereditary lords, is the Qin's design, and later dynasties followed it for two thousand years. The dynasty fell fast; the system it invented did not.

Where is the Terracotta Army? Outside Xi'an in Shaanxi, at the mausoleum complex of Qin Shi Huang, where thousands of life-size clay soldiers were buried to guard the First Emperor's tomb. It is the country's best-known archaeological site and pairs naturally with the Shaanxi History Museum in the city itself.
