The dynasty whose name you use every day: the Han, hanzi and the Han people

You will say this dynasty's name within an hour of landing. Hànyǔ (汉语) is the Chinese language, Hànzì (汉字) are Chinese characters, Hànzú (汉族) is the majority ethnic group. All of it is named after the Hàn (汉).

When it ran, and what came before and after

206 BC – AD 220, more than four centuries of largely unified rule. Liú Bāng (刘邦), a village official turned rebel leader, founded it in 206 BC after the collapse of the Qin, with its capital at Chang'an — today's Xi'an. After a brief interruption the dynasty was restored in AD 25 with Luoyang as capital, which is why you will see "Western Han" and "Eastern Han" on timelines. When it collapsed in AD 220 the country split into the Three Kingdoms.

What the Han is known for

The Silk Road. Emperor Wu sent envoys west, opening the trade routes that linked China to Central Asia and beyond. Everything you see marketed today under that name traces back to this decision.

Confucian learning as the basis of government. Emperor Wu made it the foundation of official life, and the scholar-official became China's governing class.

Paper and early science. Paper was refined by Cai Lun around AD 105. Zhāng Héng (张衡), astronomer and inventor, built an instrument to detect distant earthquakes. The wheelbarrow and careful records of the stars date from these centuries too.

Its name. The period shaped Chinese identity so deeply that the ethnic group and the writing system both carry it.

One more name worth knowing: Sīmǎ Qiān (司马迁), the court historian whose Records of the Grand Historian (史记, Shǐjì) set the pattern for all later Chinese history writing. Almost everything anyone tells you about the Xia, Shang and Zhou comes through him.

What you'll actually bump into

The word itself. When a form asks your 民族 (mínzú, ethnicity) and your Chinese friend writes 汉, that is this dynasty. When someone compliments your 汉语, same.

Han-style dress. Hànfú (汉服) is a live, growing hobby — you will see young people in flowing robes photographing each other at every scenic spot in the country on weekends. The name points here.

The White Horse Temple. Founded in AD 68 in Luoyang, traditionally China's first Buddhist temple.

Where this comes up

Xī'ān (西安) again, but for a different tomb: the Han Yangling Mausoleum, where thousands of small painted figurines lie beneath a glass walkway you stand on. In Luòyáng (洛阳), the White Horse Temple. And in Guangzhou, the Museum of the Nanyue King — a Western Han royal tomb found intact, jade burial suit and all, the best reminder that the Han reached a long way south.

In daily conversation, the Han is the default reference point for "classical China" — the era people mean when they say something is traditional without specifying.

What Laonei does

Laonei (老内) translates and explains. Han-era terms leak into modern life without warning: 汉族 on a form, 史记 quoted in an article, a hanfu shop assistant explaining sleeve styles. Ask what the speaker assumed you knew, at liuxuesheng.help/talk.

FAQ

Which two cities served as Han capitals? Chang'an, on the site of today's Xi'an, for the Western Han from 206 BC, and later Luoyang, after the dynasty was restored in AD 25 as the Eastern Han. Both cities still trade heavily on that history, and both have major museums built around what was dug up there.

Why are Chinese characters called hanzi? They are named after the Han dynasty, which shaped Chinese identity so deeply that the majority ethnic group is also called Han. The same root gives you Hanyu for the Chinese language and Hanfu for Han-style clothing — so the dynasty's name is embedded in the everyday vocabulary you use here.

What did the Han dynasty invent? Paper, refined by Cai Lun around AD 105, is the headline. The era also produced Zhang Heng's seismoscope for detecting distant earthquakes, the wheelbarrow, careful astronomical records, and Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, the work that set the form for Chinese history writing ever after.
