Niulang and Zhinü: one night a year, on a bridge of birds
If you are in China in late summer, you will notice a day when flower prices double and every café puts out a couple's set menu. That is Qixi, and this is the story it comes from — a story about two people who are allowed to meet once a year.
A cowherd, a weaver, and an ox that talks
Niulang is an orphan, pushed out of his brother's house with a plough, a little bread and one old ox. He builds a hut near a stream and farms a scrap of land nobody wanted. The ox, it turns out, can speak, and it tells him where to be and when.
That is how he meets Zhinü, the youngest daughter of Heaven's queen, bathing in a lake with her sisters. The sisters fly home; she stays. They marry, have a son and a daughter, and live an ordinary, happy, entirely earthly life. The village notices only that her cloth is unusually fine.
Before the old ox dies, it tells Niulang to keep its hide: there may come a day you need to fly.
The river of stars
Heaven notices. Zhinü is taken back up by guards, and Niulang puts his two children into baskets on a shoulder pole, throws the ox hide over his shoulders and climbs after her. He almost reaches her.
Then the Queen Mother draws her silver hairpin once across the sky, and a river of stars opens between them — the Milky Way. He stands on one bank with the children crying; she stands on the other.
The magpies are what make this story bearable. Every year they fly up in their thousands and press themselves into a bridge, and for one night the family crosses.
The cast
- Niulang 牛郎 (Niú Láng) — a poor, kind-hearted orphan who works the land.
- Zhinü 织女 (Zhī Nǔ) — the Heavenly Queen's youngest daughter, who weaves the clouds.
- The old ox 老牛 (lǎo niú) — a talking ox, once a being from Heaven, who guides Niulang.
- The Queen Mother of the West 王母娘娘 (Wáng Mǔ Niángniang) — Zhinü's grandmother, who values order above everything.
- The magpies 喜鹊 (xǐquè) — the birds who form the bridge.
Where you will meet it in daily life
Qixi (七夕) falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, usually in August, and is treated as China's Valentine's Day — flowers, dinners, gifts, a wave of advertising. Knowing the legend changes how the day reads: it is not a celebration of being together, it is a celebration of one night snatched out of a year apart. Couples in long-distance relationships take it seriously.
Look up and you can see the two of them. Zhinü is the star Europeans call Vega, Niulang is Altair, and the Milky Way runs between them. A Chinese friend can point them out on a clear summer night.
If rain falls on Qixi, older people will tell you those are their tears — of joy this time. This is one of China's Four Great Folk Legends, alongside the White Snake, the Butterfly Lovers and Meng Jiangnü.
Listen to it
Laonei narrates this legend in 3 chapters: the ox, the house on earth, and the magpie bridge. The second chapter is the one that gets people, because it is just a family being happy for a few years. Listen at liuxuesheng.help/talk.
FAQ
When is Qixi and what do people actually do?
Qixi falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, so the Western date shifts each year, generally landing in August. It is not a public holiday. In practice it looks like Valentine's Day: couples book restaurants, flowers get expensive, and shops run promotions. The older customs around weaving and needlework survive mainly in the name.
Which stars are the cowherd and the weaver girl?
Zhinü is Vega and Niulang is Altair, two bright stars on opposite sides of the Milky Way — the river of stars the Queen Mother opened between them with her hairpin. They are easy to find on a clear summer evening, and the story is the reason many Chinese people learned their first constellation.
Why magpies?
Magpies (喜鹊) are lucky birds in Chinese culture; the first character means joy. In the legend they fly up on the seventh night of the seventh month and form a living bridge across the Milky Way so the family can meet. "Magpie bridge" (鹊桥) is still used as a phrase for anything that brings two separated people together.
