When Beijing became the capital: Kublai Khan's Dadu

Every foreigner living in Beijing is living inside a Yuán (元) decision. The city is the capital of China because Kublai Khan put his capital here in the 1270s, and it has effectively never stopped being one.

When it ran, and what came before and after

1271–1368. Kublai Khan (忽必烈, Hūbìliè), grandson of Genghis Khan, founded the dynasty in 1271, and in 1279 completed the conquest of the Song, reunifying China after centuries of division. Heavy taxes, inflation and floods brought unrest, and the dynasty fell in 1368 to the Ming.

What the Yuan is known for

Reunification under Kublai Khan, ending the long north–south split.

Dàdū (大都) — the start of Beijing as capital. Dadu stands beneath today's Beijing, and this was the first time the city served as capital of all China.

Drama and porcelain. Yuán zájù (元杂剧) is the ancestor of later Chinese opera; Guān Hànqīng (关汉卿) is its great playwright, best known for The Injustice to Dou E (窦娥冤). Blue-and-white porcelain from Jǐngdézhèn (景德镇) begins here — the single most exported object in Chinese history.

Trade and exchange. A unified multi-ethnic state whose roads, postal relays and restored Grand Canal linked north and south, while sea and Silk Road trade brought merchants, astronomers and travellers including Marco Polo.

The astronomer and engineer Guō Shǒujìng (郭守敬) produced the Shoushi calendar of 1281, which measured the year to within 26 seconds and was used for over 360 years.

What you'll actually bump into

Blue-and-white. 青花 (qīnghuā) is the pattern on the cheap teapot in your office, the expensive vase in a hotel lobby, and a famous pop song. It starts as a Yuan export product made in Jingdezhen with cobalt traded in from the west, and it is probably the most recognisable Chinese visual anywhere in the world.

Hutong geometry. Beijing's old grid and the layout of its lanes go back to Dadu's planning. When someone tells you a hutong is "from the Yuan", that is the claim being made.

Marco Polo as a conversational shortcut. He turns up constantly in Chinese framing of "when the West first saw us", and he is a safe, friendly reference point.

Where this comes up

In Beijing, three easy stops. The Miàoyīng Temple White Pagoda (妙应寺白塔) is a grand Yuan-era stupa from Kublai's Dadu, still white above the hutongs, and most people walk past it without knowing what it is. The Yuan Dadu City Wall Ruins Park lets you walk the green earthen ramparts of the Yuan capital — a long, pleasant park, at its best in spring.

Further out, Yongle Palace in Ruicheng, Shanxi, holds vast Yuan wall murals of Daoist immortals that are among the finest in China.

What Laonei does

Laonei (老内) is an AI Chinese translator and cultural guide for foreigners in China. Yuan-era names mix Mongolian and Chinese and get transliterated inconsistently in English, which makes searching for them frustrating. Ask Laonei for the characters, the pinyin with tones, and what the place actually is: liuxuesheng.help/talk.

FAQ

Which modern city grew from the Yuan capital? Beijing. The Yuan capital Dadu stood where Beijing is today, and this was the first time the city served as capital of all China. Its street grid, the earthen wall ruins in the north of the city, and landmarks such as the Miaoying Temple White Pagoda all date from that period.

Who founded the Yuan dynasty, and when? Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, declared the dynasty in 1271 and built Dadu as its capital. Reunification was completed in 1279 with the final defeat of the Southern Song, bringing the whole country under one government after centuries of division.

When did blue-and-white porcelain start? Under the Yuan, produced at Jingdezhen in Jiangxi. It became one of China's defining exports and the pattern most instantly recognised as Chinese anywhere in the world, and Jingdezhen is still a working porcelain city that you can visit, tour the kilns in, and buy from today.
