The seventy years when China broke up and the south got rich

Wǔdài Shíguó (五代十国) is the period most timelines rush past. It is worth two minutes, because it is when the economic centre of China moved south and stayed there.

When it ran, and what came before and after

AD 907–979. The Tang fell in 907 and five short-lived dynasties — Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han and Later Zhou — ruled the Yellow River heartland in quick succession, while ten or more independent kingdoms governed the south and southwest. Reunification under the Song began in 960 and was completed in 979.

What the period is known for

Five northern dynasties, ten southern kingdoms. The name is literal and the arithmetic is the point: the north churned through régimes while the south stayed put.

The economic shift south. Warfare was frequent in the north, but the southern states enjoyed relative calm, and trade, farming, seawalls, silk, tea and porcelain all flourished. China's centre of gravity moved to the Yangtze and the coast, and it has never moved back.

Landscape painting and ci poetry at a peak. Monumental landscape painting by masters such as Dǒng Yuán (董源) and Jīng Hào (荆浩); the mature cí (词) lyric, perfected by Lǐ Yù (李煜) and the Huajian school.

The groundwork for the Song. Reformers such as Chái Róng (柴荣), Emperor Shizong of Later Zhou, rebuilt armies and cities, and the court official Feng Dao sponsored large-scale woodblock printing of the Confucian classics.

Zhū Wēn (朱温), a former Tang general, opens the era by founding the Later Liang in 907.

What you'll actually bump into

Li Yu's poems, with no warning. The last ruler of Southern Tang lost his kingdom and became one of China's greatest lyric poets writing about it. 问君能有几多愁 — "how much sorrow can one man hold" — is quoted in songs, dramas and on bad days by ordinary people. It is the most emotionally direct classical Chinese most learners will ever meet, and it is genuinely worth reading.

Hangzhou's origin story. The Wúyuè (吴越) kingdom that ruled here is a real point of local pride, and its seawalls are part of why the city exists in its current form.

Where this comes up

In Hángzhōu (杭州), mainly. The Léifēng Pagoda (雷峰塔) by West Lake was first raised by the Wuyue kingdom in 975, and the rebuilt tower shelters the original base and relics — you walk down to see them. The Feilai Feng carvings at Lingyin Temple, cliff Buddhas begun under the Buddhist-minded Wuyue kings, are on the same day out.

In Nánjīng (南京), the Southern Tang Mausoleums hold the underground tombs of two Southern Tang rulers, with carved chambers open to visitors — Li Yu's own dynasty.

And every time someone explains why the Yangtze Delta is the rich part of the country, this is the century the answer starts in.

What Laonei does

Laonei (老内) translates and explains, which is useful for a period with no clean English name and a lot of near-identical dynasty labels — Later Tang is not the Tang, Southern Tang is neither. Ask Laonei which one a sign means, or what a ci lyric actually says: liuxuesheng.help/talk.

FAQ

How long did the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period last? About seventy years, from the fall of the Tang in 907 to reunification under the Song in 979. The Song had begun taking over in 960, so the closing years overlap — the north was already under Song rule while the last southern kingdoms held out.

Why was the south important then? The southern kingdoms were more peaceful than the war-torn north, so trade, farming and crafts thrived — silk, tea, porcelain and seawall-protected farmland. China's economic centre moved south during these decades and has remained there ever since, which is the period's most lasting consequence.

Who was Li Yu? The last ruler of Southern Tang and one of China's greatest ci lyric poets. He lost his kingdom to the Song, and the poems he wrote afterwards about loss and memory are still widely quoted and set to music, making him far better known as a writer than as a king.
